Across the Danube Region, dozens of small and medium-sized towns share a common challenge: what to do with the vast industrial sites left behind by economic restructuring: former factories, mines and steelworks that once defined the identity and prosperity of entire communities and now stand abandoned or underused. How can these places be brought back to life in a way that creates jobs, strengthens communities and respects the heritage embedded in their walls and landscapes?

This international conference brings together local authorities, urban regeneration practitioners, researchers, investors and policymakers from across Central and Eastern Europe to exchange experiences, debate solutions and forge new partnerships around this shared challenge. Participants from at least six countries will present and discuss models of industrial heritage transformation from Poland, Slovenia, Romania and beyond.

The conference is organised in the framework of the projects ReInd-BBG and NONA, funded by the EU through the Interreg Danube Program, by the the Municipality of Reșița, MKBT, the Iskriva Institute from Slovenia and the ITI Banat Mountains Intercommunity Development Association.

Reșița offers a uniquely fitting setting. As Romania's oldest steel-making centre and one of the oldest in Central and Eastern Europe, the city has spent the past decade transforming its industrial legacy into a driver of renewal: through heritage revitalisation initiatives, strategic investments and a community committed to reimagining its future. In 2026, the city marks 250 years since its factories were granted the right to brand their own products, and 100 years since Reșița was officially granted town status - a timely and symbolic moment to reflect on what industrial identity means, and where it can lead.
